On our trip to the Sunshine Coast we ended up in Nanaimo to visit Bill and Elly. Bill was the best man at our wedding in 1963 on the UBC campus at Saint Anselems church. I had just graduated from Nursing School and we were quite broke after three years of earning $6.00 per month. Ofcourse room and board was free at Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing. If you call free, working as a student nurse fourty hours a week. But still, where would the oldest daughter of parents with eight children have enough money for a wedding. It just happened that a young minister offered us the church, complete with the flowers from an earlier wedding that day, for our wedding. A handful of people came and the wedding party enjoyed a reception at the home of another nurse. The wedding didn't cost a thing. Both the best man and bridesmaid are still in my life.
